About Mallerstang

Mallerstang is a scenic dale located at the head of the upper Eden Valley in Cumbria. Historically, it was part of Westmorland. Despite being in Cumbria, Mallerstang is included in the Accessible Yorkshire walks series as it lies within the boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Did you know that 25% of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is in Cumbria?

The Walk

This linear walk follows a section of the Pennine Bridleway from The Thrang to The Water Cut.

Highlights:

  • The Water Cut: A stunning stone sculpture by Mary Bourne, located high on the eastern side of the Mallerstang valley. This is one of ten stone sculptures placed at intervals along the length of the River Eden.

  • Views: From the sculpture, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views down the valley.

Terrain:

  • The route follows a bridle path and the terrain is generally good.

  • However, the path is uphill to the sculpture, necessitating a robust all-terrain wheelchair or mobility scooter.
