The Story Behind Access the Dales

Access the Dales was founded by Debbie North, a wheelchair user and passionate advocate for accessible outdoor adventures. After Debbie was diagnosed with a spinal condition that left her unable to walk, she found that many of the places she loved to explore were no longer accessible to her. Determined to make a difference, Debbie began campaigning for better access to the outdoors for people with disabilities. Her efforts laid the foundation for Access the Dales, which was created to ensure that everyone can enjoy the stunning landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, no matter their mobility.

The Mission

Access the Dales is on a mission to break down barriers that prevent people with disabilities from accessing the countryside. Our goal is to create an environment where outdoor spaces are inclusive and welcoming for all, whether you’re a wheelchair user, have limited mobility, or care for someone with accessibility needs.

Key to this mission is the provision of all-terrain wheelchairs and accessible walking routes. The charity works closely with the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the team in the Forest of Bowland to identify, map, and promote accessible routes that wheelchair users and others with mobility challenges can enjoy. We also provide specialised outdoor equipment, making it easier for everyone to explore the breath-taking scenery of the countryside..

What Access the Dales Offers

All-Terrain Wheelchairs One of the core services provided by Access the Dales is the use of all-terrain wheelchairs, which can be hired free of charge. These wheelchairs are designed to navigate rough terrain, allowing users to explore paths and trails that would typically be off-limits to standard wheelchairs. From steep hillsides to uneven paths, these all-terrain chairs open up the beauty of the Dales to everyone, including those with physical disabilities.

Accessible Walking Routes Access the Dales is dedicated to identifying and creating accessible walking routes that cater to a range of mobility needs. They collaborate with local authorities and landowners to remove obstacles such as stiles, uneven ground, and narrow paths, making trails more accessible. The charity also provides detailed route maps and descriptions, ensuring that visitors know what to expect before setting out.

Accessible Accommodation In addition to providing access to outdoor spaces, Access the Dales is also working to improve the availability of accessible accommodation within the Yorkshire Dales. They have partnered with local businesses to create a network of places to stay that are fully accessible for those with disabilities, ensuring that people can enjoy a comfortable and barrier-free experience from the moment they arrive.

These events are designed to foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors in a safe and inclusive environment. Whether it’s an adaptive hiking session or a nature exploration day, these activities allow everyone to share in the joy of being outdoors.

Why Access Matters

For many people, spending time in nature is a crucial part of their physical and mental well-being. The calming effect of the natural world, combined with the benefits of exercise, can have a profound impact on health and happiness. Yet, for individuals with mobility challenges, accessing the countryside can be incredibly difficult. Paths may be inaccessible, accommodations may not be suitable, and the lack of facilities can make the experience stressful rather than relaxing.

This is where Access the Dales makes a real difference. By removing these barriers and providing the tools and information people need, the charity helps ensure that everyone can experience the healing power of nature.
